A carburetor kit is matched to the stamp on the carburetor, not the name on the trimmer.

String trimmer carburetor rebuild kits, trimmer line from 0.065 to 0.095 inch and spark plugs for two-stroke and small four-stroke engines, sold at the Austin counter. Kits run $12 to $35, line $7 to $30 by length or spool. Indicative until we see the part.

Carburetor rebuild kit

String trimmer carburetor rebuild kit, read from the body stamp

Most handheld two-stroke equipment (trimmers, blowers, edgers, small chainsaws) runs a diaphragm carburetor from one of a handful of makers. The same trimmer model may have shipped with two different carburetors over its life. The engine brand tells us very little. The model code cast or stamped on the carburetor body tells us almost everything.

A rebuild kit has the pump diaphragm, the metering diaphragm, the gaskets, an inlet needle and its spring, and on some kits a fuel screen. Those are the rubber and fibre parts that stiffen after a season of ethanol fuel sitting in the bowl. A kit costs a fraction of a new carburetor and fixes the usual complaints: hard starting, dying at full throttle, or running only with the choke on.

A kit will not fix a cracked body, a stripped adjustment screw seat or a primer bulb that has split. We check for those when you bring the carburetor in. If the body is gone, we say so instead of selling a kit that will not help.

Spools of trimmer line in several diameters

LG-01 · String trimmer line

Trimmer line by diameter and profile, cut to length or on the spool

Line is copolymer nylon, sold by diameter in thousandths of an inch. The head on your trimmer is rated for a range, usually printed on the head or in the manual. Go thicker than the rating and the head jams or the engine bogs; go thinner and it breaks every thirty seconds against a fence.

Round line wears longest and feeds cleanest. Twisted line cuts thicker weeds quietly. Square and star profiles cut hard but snap more on chain-link and stone. Cordless trimmers almost always want 0.065 or 0.080. Gas trimmers around 25 cc take 0.080 or 0.095.

We cut it off the bulk spool by the foot, so you can try a profile without buying a three-pound spool.

Spark plugs

A plug is matched by thread diameter, reach and heat range, and the gap is set before it leaves the counter. Most handheld two-strokes use a 14 mm thread with a 3/8 inch reach; a long-reach plug in a short-reach head hits the piston. Bring the old plug. Its colour also tells us whether the carburetor is running rich or lean, which matters if you are rebuilding it anyway.

?Small engine questions

Before you buy a whole new carburetor

Should I rebuild or replace the carburetor?

If the body is sound and the adjustment screws turn freely, rebuild. If someone has already drilled out the limiter caps and stripped a screw seat, or the body is cracked, replace. We look before we suggest either.

Can I send a photo instead of bringing the carburetor?

Yes, if the stamp is readable in it. Clean the casting with a rag, light it from the side and shoot close. If we cannot read it, we will ask for the part.

Who is this not for?

Riding mower and generator owners looking for engine blocks, crankshafts or recoil housings. We stock the small consumables for handheld equipment and do not carry heavy engine parts or ship oversize items.
